How it works — examples & FAQ

What is a game tick?

Minecraft runs its world on a fixed clock of 20 ticks per second. Almost everything — mob AI, plant growth, redstone, the day/night cycle — is measured in ticks, so converting between ticks and real time is handy for command blocks, farms and timers.

The conversions

  • 20 game ticks = 1 second
  • 1 redstone tick = 2 game ticks = 0.1 second
  • 24,000 ticks = 1 Minecraft day = 20 real minutes

FAQ

Are redstone ticks the same as game ticks?

No — a redstone tick is two game ticks (0.1s). A repeater’s one-tick delay is a redstone tick, which is why the tool shows both.

Why might my farm run slower?

These conversions assume the game runs at a full 20 TPS. Heavy redstone, big farms or a slow machine can drop the tick rate, making everything take longer in real time.
